Open Letter to J.J. Abrams and CBS

Dear Mr. Abrams,

We appeal to you as producer and director of the upcoming Star Trek film to offer your guarantee that you will respect the vision of Gene Roddenberry and your film will contain no apologetic or justified scenes of torture or other human rights violations by any of the characters representing Star Fleet.

We are aware that you have stated your admiration for Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek and you desire to "do justice" to his vision. We are also aware that your other projects have often depicted the use of torture in a manner that justifies its use or feature "heroic" characters employing torture.

We feel that no matter what your attempts to "modernize" Star Trek, this type of storytelling has NO PLACE in Star Trek. Every Star Trek series and movie has gone out of its way to present messages of social justice and an enlightened humanity. In fact, a story true to Star Trek would likely be one critical of current events in the United States including the erosion of civil liberties, the ongoing unjustified war and the violation of fundamental human rights.

Star Trek is very much "in your hands" and we appeal to you to be an enlightened steward and take the highest road possible in your efforts to tell an exciting and powerful story in the tradition of Star Trek.
